What an MOT history shows
| Item | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Test date and result | When each test happened and whether it passed or failed. |
| Expiry date | When each pass certificate ran out, so you can spot gaps. |
| Mileage | The odometer reading recorded at each test. |
| Dangerous and major defects | The reasons for a fail. |
| Minor defects | Faults that did not cause a fail but were recorded. |
| Advisories | Items the tester noted for the owner to watch or repair soon. |
How far back records go
Cars, vans and motorcycles tested in Great Britain have records from 2005. Northern Ireland records start in 2017. Lorries, buses and trailers tested in Great Britain have records from 2018.
Defect categories explained
Since May 2018, testers record problems in four categories:
- Dangerous – an immediate risk to road safety or a serious environmental impact. The vehicle fails and should not be driven until repaired.
- Major – could affect safety, put other road users at risk or harm the environment. The vehicle fails.
- Minor – no significant effect on safety or the environment. The vehicle can pass, but it should be repaired.
- Advisory – something that could become a problem later. Not a fail.
Older records use earlier wording, so you may see “fail” or “refusal” items rather than these categories.
